JAMILA POMEROY

Jamila Pomeroy is an award-winning Kenyan-Canadian writer, director, producer, and on-screen storyteller whose work explores identity, culture, history, and social change. A WGC screenwriter and DGC director, she began her career in journalism, contributing to outlets including the BBC, Red Bull Media, and Hypebae before moving into film and television.

Her debut feature documentary, Union Street, premiered at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival and earned her the Outstanding Feature Film Director award at the Reelworld Film Festival, as well as Best Documentary at the Milan Independent Film Festival. She also created, wrote, directed, produced, and hosted CBC’s A Happier Planet with Jamila Pomeroy, appeared in the Daytime Emmy-nominated series How I Got Here, and wrote, directed, executive produced and hosted the CBC documentary special Muzizi, exploring food and the African diaspora in Vancouver.

In Feeding the Diaspora, Jamila joins Katie Prasad-Keough to prepare bhajia while tracing the layered histories of her coastal Kenyan heritage and the African, Indian, and Arab influences that have shaped the region. Their conversation explores creativity, representation, belonging, and what it means to create from an identity shaped by multiple diasporas, while celebrating the cultural histories we inherit and make our own.

“Food is a love language, an extension of love and why wouldn’t you want to be able to share in that.”
