SARAH KHAN

Sarah Khan is a third-generation Pakistani-Canadian model, librarian, and mental-health advocate. Moving between the worlds of fashion, literature, and community work, Sarah brings a perspective shaped by representation, storytelling, and the experience of inheriting culture generations after migration.

As a librarian, her love of literature and passion for culturally enriching works reflect a deeper interest in the stories through which people come to understand themselves and one another. Sarah has also contributed to mental-health advocacy through her work as a Not Myself Today Ambassador, supporting conversations and initiatives aimed at building a healthier and more compassionate workplace culture.

In Feeding the Diaspora, Sarah joins Katie Prasad-Keough to prepare gulab jamun from a recipe carried through her family for generations by way of California to Hong Kong to Canada. Their conversation explores Pakistani-Canadian identity, womanhood, women’s health exploring their endometriosis and adenomyosis diagnoses, matriarchy, and the women who keep culture alive. Examining what it means to inherit traditions from those who came before and choose how they will be carried forward.

“I love to be in the kitchen, that’s where the stories are really told. There is such a disarming effect, where we’re able to just talk because our hands are busy.”

“We are an amalgamation of the people around us. It’s less about where we’re from ancestrally.

Of course, we feel that and live with it in our bodies, but its also about the communities we grow up around and within.

Your best friend, your neighbours, your teacher and the parts of themselves they share with you.”
